The Canadian Pacific Plaza is a tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It stands 383 feet (117 meters) high and has 28 floors. This building was finished in 1960.
It is the 21st tallest building in Minneapolis. It was also the first major skyscraper built in the city after World War II. The Canadian Pacific Plaza is connected to other buildings by a special walkway system called a skyway. These connections lead to the Rand Tower, Soo Line Building, and US Bank Plaza.
Building History
The idea for this building started in 1955. A company called First Bank System of Minneapolis wanted a new main office. They hired an architecture firm named Holabird, Root & Burgee from Chicago to design it.
Another local firm, Thorshov & Cerny, helped with the design. They were inspired by the ideas of a famous architect named Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. They also looked at the design of the Lever House in New York City.
Construction began in 1957 when an old building was taken down. The official groundbreaking ceremony happened in January 1958. The building was finally ready for people to move in by May 1960.
Name Changes Over Time
The building was first used as the main office for First Bank System. This company is now known as U.S. Bancorp. They stayed in the building until 1992, when they moved to the Capella Tower.
After First Bank System moved out, the building was renamed One Financial Plaza. In August 2012, it got its current name, Canadian Pacific Plaza. This happened when Canadian Pacific Railway moved its main United States office into the building. About 400 employees moved from the nearby Soo Line Building.
The Soo Line Building was being changed into homes. The Soo Line Railroad is a historic railway company. Canadian Pacific became the main owner of the Soo Line Railroad in 1890. They took full control in 1990. That is when they moved their own U.S. headquarters into the old Soo Line offices.
