Soopafly's Early Life
Priest Joseph Brooks grew up in Long Beach, California. He was the oldest of three children. His father gave him a keyboard because he loved watching piano players in church. This is how he started his musical journey.
Starting His Music Career
When he was a teenager, Brooks met famous rappers Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Soopafly showed off his great keyboard skills. Because of this, he got his first job with Death Row Records. He worked on the soundtrack for the movie Murder Was The Case.
Soopafly played keyboards for Dr. Dre and Ice Cube on their song "Natural Born Killaz." He also played for Jodeci on "Come Up To My Room." His first time producing a song was for "Who Got Some Gangsta ****," which featured Snoop Dogg.
In 1995, he produced the song "Sooo Much Style" for Tha Dogg Pound. This song was on their first album, "Dogg Food." He also played keyboards on eight other songs on that album. In 1996, he was featured on the soundtrack for the movie A Thin Line Between Love and Hate with the song "I Don't Hang."
Soopafly became even more well-known when he worked on Snoop Dogg's second album, Tha Doggfather. He produced two songs on that album: "Freestyle Conversation" and "You Thought." He also appeared with the rapper Too Short. Since then, he has mostly worked with artists from his area. These include Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Warren G, RBX, and Bad Azz. So far, Soopafly has released three of his own albums.
Westurn Union Music Group
In July 2006, a new rap group called Westurn Union was formed. The group included Soopafly, Damani, and Bad Lucc. They first appeared on Snoop Dogg's album Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. They also released a song called "I Don't Think So."
In April 2008, the group released a mixtape called House Shoe Musik, Vol. 1. Later, they signed a deal with Koch Records and Doggystyle Records. Their first official album, Snoop Dogg Presents: Dubb Union, came out on September 2, 2008.
Before the album was released, a company called Western Union contacted the group and the record labels. Western Union threatened to take legal action if the group did not change its name. Even though the spelling was different (Westurn instead of Western), the labels decided to change the group's name to Dubb Union. This was to avoid any legal problems.
