The sooty barbthroat (Threnetes niger) is a type of hummingbird. These small, fast birds live in warm, wet places. You can find them in French Guiana and the far north-eastern part of Brazil.
About the Sooty Barbthroat
The sooty barbthroat lives in humid, lowland forests. This means they like areas that are warm, wet, and not very high up. Even though they live in a specific area, there are many of them. Because of this, experts believe they are not in danger of disappearing. They are listed as a "Species of Least Concern."
What Makes Them Special?
Scientists have studied the sooty barbthroat's family tree. It has been a bit confusing for them! Some people once thought this bird was just a dark version of another hummingbird, the pale-tailed barbthroat.
There were also ideas that some types of sooty barbthroats might be their own separate species. But scientists are still working to figure out the exact family connections for these birds.
