Sopó is a town and municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Cundinamarca department. Sopó is about 39 kilometers (24 miles) north of Bogotá, Colombia's capital city.

Discovering Sopó's Past
Ancient Inhabitants
Long ago, the land where Sopó now stands was home to ancient people. First, groups from the Herrera Period lived here. Later, the Muisca arrived. They were a very important indigenous group.
Muisca Rule
Sopó was part of a large Muisca territory. This area was called a zipazgo. It was ruled by a leader from a place called Bacatá. The Muisca lived here until the Spanish arrived in 1537.
Founding the Town
Sopó was officially founded on May 25, 1653. A Friar named Francisco Chacón established the town. You can still see a Muisca pattern on the town's coat of arms. It is in the lower left part.

Farming and Dairy
The main way people in Sopó make a living is through farming. Dairy farming is especially important. This means raising cows to produce milk.
Alpina: A Local Success
A big dairy company called Alpina started in Sopó. It was founded here in 1945. Today, Alpina is the third-largest dairy company in Colombia.
