Early Life and Work
Sophie grew up in the countryside of Quebec, near a town called Châteauguay. Before becoming a full-time artist, she worked as an elementary school teacher. She also helped organize camps for a group called Gender Creative Kids Canada.
Creating Assigned Male
Sophie Labelle is the author and artist of Assigned Male. This is a popular webcomic and a series of small books called zines. The comics talk about gender norms (how society expects people to act based on their gender) and privilege.
The main character is Stephie, an 11-year-old transgender girl. The comic shows Stephie as she learns about and accepts her gender. Sophie shared that when she worked with transgender children, she saw how much negative talk they heard about their bodies. She wanted to create a character like Stephie to respond to those hurtful things.
Sophie has also made helpful guides to go with her comics. These guides aim to create safer places for young transgender people. The Washington Blade newspaper called the webcomic "hilarious." They said it shows that humor about transgender topics can be funny without being mean.
Other Books and Educational Materials
Sophie has written several books and zines about gender identity and how people express their gender. Some of her works include:
- The Genderific Coloring Book
- A Girl Like Any Other
- Ciel at Camp Fabulous
- Gender Euphoria
The English version of Ciel in All Directions (published in 2020) was named one of the Best Books of the Year in 2022. Sophie has also created educational materials about bodies and relationships for Trans Student Educational Resources.
Advocacy and Online Safety
In May 2017, Sophie Labelle released a comic book called Dating Tips for Trans and Queer Weirdos. After this, she faced a lot of online harassment. Her website and social media accounts were even taken offline for a short time. Because of these experiences, Sophie became a strong supporter of Bill C-16 in Canada. This law helps protect people based on their gender identity and expression. She also speaks out for stronger laws to make online spaces safer for everyone.
