Early Life and Music Beginnings
James A'Darryl Tapp Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 9, 1977. He grew up in the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans. Around 1993, he started rapping as "Magnolia Slim." He performed at local events and block parties in his neighborhood.
His first songs were recorded with Parkway Pumpin', a small music label. His first solo album, Soulja Fa Lyfe, came out in 1994. This album sold well, with 90,000 copies sold independently. In 1995, he released a four-song collection called The Dark Side.
Music Career and Hit Songs
In 1997, a song by Soulja Slim called "You Got It" was featured on a No Limit Records music collection. In 1998, Tapp, now using the name Soulja Slim, released his album Give It 2 'Em Raw with No Limit Records. This album included his music video "From What I Was Told" and a song called "Street Life." The album was very popular, reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling 82,000 copies in its first week.
After some time away, he returned three years later with the album Streets Made Me, also released by No Limit. He then started his own music label and released Years Later in late 2002. In 2003, he released Years Later...A Few Months After, which was his last album. This album featured the song "I'll Pay for It."
In 2003, Soulja Slim worked with another New Orleans rapper, Juvenile, on the song "Slow Motion." This song was released on Juvenile's album Juve the Great. "Slow Motion" became a huge hit, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the first number one hit for both Soulja Slim and Juvenile. Since the song became number one after Soulja Slim's death, he became one of only a few artists to have a posthumous (after death) number one song.
Death
Soulja Slim passed away on November 26, 2003. He was shot four times outside his mother's home in the Gentilly area. His murder case remains unsolved.
