Soumaoro's Rise to Power
In 1203, Soumaoro captured Koumbi, which used to be the capital city of the Ghana Empire. He then conquered many groups of people nearby. In the early 1200s, he took over nine other kingdoms.
Conquering the Mandinka
One of the groups Soumaoro conquered was the Mandinka, who lived in what is now the country of Mali. Soumaoro was very harsh. He killed all the sons of the Mandinka king, except for one. This son, named Sundiata Keita, had a physical disability. Soumaoro didn't think Sundiata was a threat, so he let him live. This turned out to be a big mistake for Soumaoro.
The Battle Against Sundiata
Not long after, Sundiata Keita grew up and became a strong leader. He brought together many smaller kingdoms to fight against Soumaoro. Like Soumaoro, legends also say Sundiata had special powers.
Founding the Mali Empire
In 1230, Sundiata started the powerful Mali Empire. He finally defeated Soumaoro at a major battle called the Battle of Kirina in 1235. This battle marked the end of Soumaoro's rule and the beginning of the Mali Empire's greatness.
Soumaoro's Harsh Rule
Soumaoro ruled his empire like a tyrant, meaning he was a very cruel and unfair leader. His empire only lasted a little over 30 years because he couldn't keep things stable.
Unpopular Policies
Soumaoro made his people pay very high taxes. He demanded large amounts of gold, food, and animals from them. He also forced people to work for him and took valuable things from their families. He was very suspicious and would kill anyone he thought might try to challenge his power. Even though he was a successful fighter, Soumaoro was known for being arrogant, brutal, and intolerant. He failed to earn the trust and loyalty of the people he wanted to rule, which eventually led to his downfall.
