SouthPark Mall is a large shopping mall in Moline, Illinois. Moline is part of the Quad Cities, which includes cities in both Illinois and Iowa. This mall serves all the people living in these cities.

You can find SouthPark Mall southwest of where Interstate 74 and Illinois Route 5 (John Deere Road) meet. Its address is 4500 16th Street. It is one of two main malls in the Quad Cities area. The other is NorthPark Mall in Davenport, Iowa.

The company that owns and runs the mall now is Macerich. Before that, other companies like Simon Property Group and General Growth Properties managed it. The main stores at the mall are Dillard's, Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, and Von Maur. There is also one large empty store that used to be Younkers. The mall has one floor, with over 60 stores. It covers a huge area of 825,000 square feet.

What is the History of SouthPark Mall?

SouthPark Mall first opened its doors on February 27, 1974. It cost $12 million to build. The mall was built on 47 acres of land.

Original Stores and Early Changes

When it first opened, the mall had three main stores: Montgomery Ward, Petersen Harned Von Maur (now Von Maur), and Younkers.

Over the years, the mall grew bigger. In 1978, a JCPenney store was added. Then, in 1990, Sears and a food court were built.

Changes in the 2000s

In early 2001, Montgomery Ward closed down. This left a big empty space for three years. In 2004, Dillard's took over that space and rebuilt it.

A Walgreens pharmacy used to be inside the mall. It moved to a new building outside the mall in 2003. In 2006, Old Navy opened a store in the old Walgreens spot. However, Old Navy closed its SouthPark Mall location in May 2013. This was because sales were not good at their stores in the Quad Cities.

Since the year 2000, the mall has had trouble keeping all its stores. Many big national stores left. Now, almost half of the stores are local or regional businesses. Many national stores that left moved to NorthPark Mall in Davenport, Iowa.

Recent Changes and Renovations

The Sears store closed in October 2013. This was part of a plan by Sears to save money. After Sears and Old Navy left, SouthPark Mall had only four main stores.

In September 2013, the city of Moline and Macerich started planning to update the mall. A big renovation project began in April 2014. This included tearing down the 1990 addition, which had the old Sears store and food court.

The main part of the mall was updated by November 2014. A new Dick's Sporting Goods store was built where Sears used to be. In 2015, Macerich also improved the landscaping around the mall. They also repaved the parking lots and bridges leading into the mall.

On April 18, 2018, it was announced that Younkers would close. Its parent company was going out of business. The Younkers store closed on August 29, 2018. In August 2018, Ashley HomeStore opened a store near the former Younkers space.
