South Amherst is found in the southwestern part of the town of Amherst. It is next to Amherst Center to the north. To the west, it borders the town of Hadley. The area stretches south all the way to Bay Road.

The total area of South Amherst is about 11 square kilometers (4.2 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.06 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.
The Historic Village Center
The original village of South Amherst is on the eastern side of the CDP. It is where Shays Street, South East Street, and Station Road meet. The village has a lovely open space called a town common. This area is between South East and Middle streets. It is known as the South Amherst Common or Fiddlers Green. Many old houses around this common are part of a special historic district.
