What is South Tibet?
South Tibet is a region in the eastern Himalayas. Both India and China claim this land. India calls most of it Arunachal Pradesh, which is one of its states. China, however, sees it as part of its Tibet Autonomous Region. This disagreement has led to a long-standing border dispute between the two countries.
Why is the Border Disputed?
The border dispute between India and China over South Tibet goes back many years. It's mainly about where the official boundary line should be.
The McMahon Line
A key part of this dispute involves the McMahon Line. This line was drawn in 1914 during a meeting in Shimla, India. Representatives from British India, Tibet, and China were there. The McMahon Line was meant to be the border between British India and Tibet.
- India accepts the McMahon Line as the official border.
- China does not accept the McMahon Line. They say that Tibet was not fully independent at the time and could not sign such an agreement.
Because of this disagreement, both countries claim the same land, leading to the ongoing dispute.
