South Twin Lake is a beautiful lake found in the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest in Taylor County, Wisconsin. It's a special place known for its nature and a project that helps trees grow.

For many years, Janet and Carl J. Nelson worked to help White Birch trees grow here. They started a "regeneration project" to make sure young white birch trees could thrive. This helped the whole ecosystem around the lake. The Nelsons retired in 2008.

Exploring South Twin Lake

Around South Twin Lake, you can find special "listening points." These are quiet spots where you can relax and enjoy the sounds of the lake and the forest. It's a great way to connect with nature.

Unique Features of the Lake Area

The road leading to the lake crosses a long, winding hill called a glacial esker. This esker was formed by glaciers many thousands of years ago. It's about a quarter-mile from the north end of the lake.

The lake is also a peaceful place because boats with motors are not allowed. This rule helps keep the lake quiet and safe for wildlife.

Paths and Trails

Until 2008, Carl Nelson took care of a path along the eastern and southern sides of the lake. This path goes past several listening points. It also passes through the area where the white birch trees were being regrown. These paths are still there for you to explore.

Animals and Nature

South Twin Lake is home to many different animals. You might see frogs hopping near the water. The lake is also filled with fish like bluegill and bass. If you are lucky, you might even spot deer drinking from the lake's edge.

Lake Management

In 2008, the National Forest Service took over the main care of South Twin Lake. This happened because of an agreement made back in 1978. The Nelson family's cabin, which was near the lake, was carefully removed by family members in the spring of 2009.

In the winter of 2009 and into 2010, the US Forest Service allowed some trees to be cut down south of the lake. This is called a "clear cut" and is sometimes done to manage the forest.

It's interesting to know that there are at least three other lakes in Wisconsin with the same name, according to the USGS GNIS.
