South Woodstock is a small village in Vermont, United States. It is an "unincorporated area," which means it's not a separate town with its own government. Instead, it's part of the larger town of Woodstock. South Woodstock is also a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means the U.S. Census Bureau defines it for gathering population data.

This village is located in Windsor County. It sits in a beautiful spot called the Kedron Valley. South Woodstock is about 1,040 feet (317 meters) above sea level.

About South Woodstock

South Woodstock has its own post office, which opened way back in 1828. Today, its special mail code, called a ZIP code, is 05071. This ZIP code area is quite large. It covers not just the village but also much of the southern part of the town of Woodstock. In 2000, about 456 people lived in this ZIP code area.

Life in the Village

Long ago, South Woodstock was a big center for raising sheep. Today, the village has a mix of shops and homes. Besides the post office, the community has a helpful volunteer fire department. This group of volunteers works hard to keep everyone safe. The main town of Woodstock also has its own police department that serves the area.

Historic South Woodstock

A special part of the village, called the South Woodstock Village Historic District, is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a place with buildings and areas that have a lot of history.

The historic district covers about 360 acres. It includes 44 buildings that help tell the story of the past. There are also 11 newer buildings that are not part of the historic story. Many of the old buildings are made of brick. You can see examples of two old building styles here: Greek Revival and Federal architecture. These styles were popular before the American Civil War. Some famous buildings include an old school from 1825, which later became a community hall. There's also the South Chapel, built in 1839, and the Perkins Academy from 1848.

A Look at Its History

People first started settling in the South Woodstock area in the 1770s. They built farms on the hilltops around the village. The village itself grew in the valley. This happened because of the Cottle brothers, who built "gristmills" there. Gristmills were places where farmers could bring their grains to be ground into flour.

As the village grew, it started offering more services to the farmers living nearby. The Cottle family built many beautiful brick houses in the "Federal period" style. Another family, the Ransoms, built and ran shops in the village. South Woodstock has kept its early 1800s look partly because it wasn't on a major railroad line. Railroads were very important for the economy back then. Because the village didn't have a train station, its economy didn't change as much. This helped it keep its historic charm until cars and trucks became common in the 1900s.
