About Southgate Centre
Southgate Centre is owned by Ivanhoé Cambridge. This company is part of a larger group called the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.
The mall has been growing and changing over the years. In August 2009, it had a big reopening after a major expansion. This included a new food court where you can grab a bite to eat. They also added more parking spots, which is always helpful!
Part of the expansion included space for 40 new stores. These were built under a new two-level parking area. A station for the Edmonton Light Rail Transit (LRT) system was also added. The LRT station officially opened on April 24, 2010, making it even easier for people to visit the mall.
A branch of the Edmonton Public Library used to be at Southgate Centre. It moved to a new location called Whitemud Crossing in 2002.
The mall is currently getting even bigger! A $93 million expansion is underway. This project is turning the old Sears store space into a brand new common area for the mall. It will have three floors and is expected to be finished in Fall 2021.
Main Stores at Southgate Centre
Shopping malls often have large stores called "anchor tenants" or "anchor stores." These are usually big department stores that attract many shoppers. They help bring people into the mall.
Current Anchor Stores
Southgate Centre currently has three main anchor stores:
- Hudson's Bay: This store has been at the mall since it first opened in 1970. It covers 21,976 square metres (236,550 sq ft).
- Safeway: This grocery store opened in 1993. It took over the space that used to be the Woodward's Food Floor. It covers 4,884 square metres (52,570 sq ft).
- Crate & Barrel: This home furnishings store opened in 2012.
Former Anchor Stores
Over the years, some anchor stores have changed:
- Sears Canada: This store opened on September 1, 2000. It was a very large store, covering 24,435 square metres (263,020 sq ft). Sears closed its doors on January 8, 2018. The space later became "Big Comfort" for a short time. Now, it's being redeveloped into a new mall area with smaller shops.
- Edmonton Public Library: This library branch closed in 2002. The space is now a Dollarama store.
- Eatons: This department store closed in 1999. Its space was then taken over by Sears in 2000.
- Woodward's: This store was one of the original anchors when the mall opened in 1970. It closed in 1993. Its space was then used by Eaton's.
- Woodward's Food Floor: This was the grocery section of Woodward's. It also opened in 1970 and closed in 1993. Safeway then moved into this space.

History of Southgate Centre
Southgate Centre first opened its doors on August 12, 1970. When it opened, it was a very important shopping center. It was the largest mall west of Toronto at that time! It was also the first mall in Alberta to have two big department stores: Woodward's and The Bay.
In 1993, Woodward's went out of business. Its space was then taken over by Eatons. This meant Eaton's moved from another mall called Heritage Mall. Also, Safeway moved into the part of Woodward's that used to be the food floor.
By 1999, Eaton's also went out of business. The next year, Sears moved into that space. Sears also moved from the nearby Heritage Mall. After Sears left, Heritage Mall was taken down and rebuilt into a new area called Century Park.
On August 12, 2010, Southgate Centre celebrated a big birthday: its 40th anniversary! It has been a major shopping spot in Edmonton for a long time.
