Southridge Mall is a big shopping mall located in the Milwaukee County area of Wisconsin. It's found in the suburbs of Greendale and Greenfield, Wisconsin.
This mall is huge! It covers about 1,177,783 square feet. That makes it one of the largest malls in Wisconsin, tied with the Fox River Mall in Grand Chute.
Southridge Mall has several main stores, often called "anchor stores." These are big stores that attract many shoppers. Current anchor stores include TJ Maxx, Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Macy's, JCPenney, and Round 1 Entertainment.
Some anchor spots are currently empty. These used to be home to stores like Boston Store and Kohl's.
A Look at the Stores
Over the years, some well-known stores have left or changed at the mall.
- Sears closed its doors in September 2017.
- Kohl's moved to a different shopping area in September 2018.
- Boston Store closed in summer 2018. This happened because its main company went out of business.
The space where Sears used to be is now home to several new stores. These include Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Round 1 Entertainment, and TJ Maxx.
Mall History
Southridge Mall first opened its doors in 1970. It was built as a "sister mall" to Northridge Mall. Both malls were located on 76th Street, making them easy to reach from major roads.
Two people, Herb Kohl and a company called Taubman Centers, Inc., helped build both malls.
In 1988, the Kohl family sold their share of Southridge Mall. A company called Western Development Corporation then took over. This company specializes in managing large shopping malls. Later, in 2020, the mall's ownership changed again, going to its lender.
One of the mall's original main stores was Gimbels. Over time, this store changed names several times:
- It became Marshall Field's.
- Then it was H. C. Prange Co..
- Later, it was sold to Younkers.
Eventually, that large building was divided into smaller stores like Cost Plus World Market, Steve & Barry's, and Linens 'n Things. Finally, the entire building became the Macy's store you see today.
In 2015, the company that owned Sears decided to separate many of its properties, including the Sears store at Southridge Mall. These properties became part of a new company called Seritage Growth Properties.
