Southwest Harbor is a small community located in the state of Maine, United States. It's part of a larger area also called Southwest Harbor, which is a type of town found in New England. This community is in Hancock County. In 2010, about 720 people lived here. The whole town had 1,764 residents at that time.

Where is Southwest Harbor?
The Southwest Harbor community is the main village within the town of Southwest Harbor. It sits on Mount Desert Island. This area is mostly built around a water inlet called Southwest Harbor. It also stretches north to another inlet known as Norwood Cove. Both of these water areas are at the southern end of Somes Sound. Somes Sound is a long, narrow arm of the Gulf of Maine.
Getting Around Southwest Harbor
Maine State Route 102 goes through Southwest Harbor. If you drive southwest on this road, you will reach Tremont in about 2.5 miles (4 km). If you go north for about 6 miles (10 km), you will get to Somesville. Somesville is at the northern end of Somes Sound.
Another road, Route 102A, branches off Route 102. This split happens at the southern part of Southwest Harbor. Route 102A forms a loop through places like Seawall and Bass Harbor. It eventually connects back to Tremont, about 7 miles (11 km) away.
