SpaghettiOs is a popular American brand of canned pasta. These fun, ring-shaped pasta pieces come in a tasty tomato sauce. They are made especially for kids, often advertised as being "less messy" than regular spaghetti. Imagine eating spaghetti with a spoon!

Each year, over 150 million cans of SpaghettiOs are sold. You can find them in plain tomato sauce or with extra ingredients. Some varieties include meatballs, slices of meat like hot dogs, or even beef-filled ravioli. There are also versions with added calcium to help you grow strong bones.

While SpaghettiOs is a specific brand, similar ring-shaped pasta dishes are sold in many other countries. They might be called 'spaghetti hoops', 'spaghetti loops', or 'spaghetti rings'.

The Story of SpaghettiOs

Canned spaghetti has been around for a long time. But the idea for ring-shaped pasta was new in 1965. The Campbell Soup Company introduced SpaghettiOs under their Franco-American brand.

Who Invented SpaghettiOs?

A marketing manager named Donald Goerke helped create SpaghettiOs. People even called him "the Daddy-O of SpaghettiOs"! He wanted to make a pasta dish that was easy to eat without making a mess. Before choosing rings, they thought about other shapes. These included cowboys, astronauts, stars, and sports-themed shapes.

Donald Goerke was very creative. He helped develop over 100 products during his 35 years at Campbell's. This includes the popular Chunky line of soups.

Launching a New Pasta

SpaghettiOs were launched across the country without any small-scale testing first. They used television ads to tell everyone about the new product. The ads had a catchy tag line: "the neat round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon." There was also a famous jingle that went "Uh-Oh! SpaghettiOs." This tune was sung by Jimmie Rodgers.

After SpaghettiOs became popular, other companies quickly started making their own versions of spaghetti hoops.

Keeping Food Safe

Sometimes, food companies need to check their products to make sure they are perfect. In June 2010, Campbell's took back some cans of SpaghettiOs with Meatballs. This was because a machine at one of their factories had a problem. Luckily, no one got sick, and there were no complaints from customers. This shows how companies work to keep our food safe.

New Flavors and Twists

In 2023, Campbell's launched a new flavor: Spicy Original SpaghettiOs featuring Frank's RedHot. This new version was made to appeal to older fans, like young adults. A company executive said it was a "hot, more mature twist on a classic offering." One person who tried it said it was not too spicy, but still had a nice kick. They also liked its brighter red color.

What's in SpaghettiOs?

Let's look at the ingredients in SpaghettiOs Original. The main ingredients are water and tomato puree. The pasta itself is made from wheat flour and has added vitamins like niacin and folic acid.

Other ingredients include high-fructose corn syrup for sweetness and salt. It also has a little bit of cheddar cheese and vegetable oil. Skim milk, beta carotene for color, and citric acid are also added. Paprika extract and other flavors complete the taste.

If you have allergies, it's good to know that SpaghettiOs Original contains wheat and milk.
