Discovering Spaulding Square's Past
How Spaulding Square Began
Spaulding Square gets its name from Albert Starr Spaulding. He was a California architect. Mr. Spaulding bought this land in 1914. Then, he divided it into smaller pieces for homes. The neighborhood was built between 1916 and 1921.
Early Residents and Homes
Many of the first people to live here worked in the movie industry. They were actors and technicians. There are about 160 homes in Spaulding Square. You can see many different styles of houses. These include Colonial-style bungalows, Italian, Renaissance, English, Mediterranean, Spanish, Prairie, and Craftsman homes.
One famous early resident was Rudolph J. Berquist. He was a cinematographer, which means he filmed movies. He was known for silent films like Camille and One Night in Rome. Mr. Berquist built his home in Spaulding Square in 1919.
Protecting the Neighborhood's Look
In 1993, Spaulding Square received a special title. The city of Los Angeles named it a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ). This means the city helps protect the neighborhood's original look. It makes sure the single-family homes keep their special character.
