Spencer is a small town, or suburb, located in the beautiful Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. It sits right on the northern bank of the Hawkesbury River. This is where the Hawkesbury River meets Mangrove Creek. Spencer is looked after by the Central Coast Council, which is its local government.

Where is Spencer Located?

Spencer is surrounded by water! The Hawkesbury River is to its south and west. Mangrove Creek is on its eastern side. Even though it's not far from the Pacific Motorway by air, taking a boat across Mangrove Creek makes the journey much shorter.

A Look at Spencer's Past

Early British explorers first landed on a "marshy outcrop" here. This happened while they were exploring the East Coast of Australia. A special monument remembers this event. You can find it near the local kids' playground and public toilets.

Spencer is thought to be named after the Parish where it is located. This area was first known as Fernleigh. The exact reason for the name Spencer is not fully clear. However, it is believed to be named after George John Spencer. He was the second Earl Spencer (1758–1834). He was in charge of the Royal Navy as the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1794 to 1810. He was also a mentor to the famous Lord Nelson. Under his leadership, the Royal Navy won many battles against the French.

How Spencer Makes Money

The economy in Spencer is mostly rural. This means that farming and fishing are the main ways people earn money here. Tourism is also becoming more popular. Visitors come to Spencer to enjoy its history and beautiful scenery.
