Wisemans Ferry is a small town located on the edge of Sydney, Australia. It is about 75 kilometres north-west of the main city centre. The town sits where the Hawkesbury River flows.
Wisemans Ferry is a popular spot for visitors. People come here to enjoy picnics and barbecues. The area also has a lot of history from the early days of Australia. Nearby, you can explore the beautiful Dharug National Park and Yengo National Park.
History of Wisemans Ferry
The town was first known as Lower Portland Headland. Its name later changed to Wisemans Ferry. This new name honoured Solomon Wiseman (1777–1838). He was an early settler who had once been a convict.
In 1817, Governor Macquarie gave Solomon Wiseman land in this area. Wiseman started a ferry service in 1827. This ferry helped move food and supplies across the Hawkesbury River. It was very important for the convicts who were building the Great North Road. Many people called Solomon Wiseman the "King of the Hawkesbury" because of his important role.
The Wisemans Ferry Post Office first opened its doors on 1 January 1857.
