History of Sperry
Long before Sperry became a town, Native American groups lived in this area. A big event during the Civil War happened nearby. This was the Battle of Chusto-Talasah on December 9, 1861. Here, Native American fighters who supported the Union fought against Confederate troops.
Sperry was first called Beuhler Switch. It got its name from Charles Beuhler, who worked for the Midland Valley Railroad. The Sperry post office opened on May 17, 1902. It served the people living between Hominy and Delaware Creeks. The post office was in the Carson Ranch house.
No one is completely sure how Sperry got its name. Some say it came from a local landowner named Henry Spybuck. The Midland Valley Railroad built a train line through Sperry in March 1905. This old train route is now a walking and biking path. It is called the Osage Prairie Trail. It connects Sperry to Tulsa and Skiatook.
Between 1905 and 1910, finding oil in the area made Sperry grow. Sperry officially became a town in 1920. At that time, 487 people lived there. The Sperry we know today was formed when two smaller communities joined together. One was Beuhler Switch, which was bigger and had the railroad. The other was the original Sperry, a smaller place with just a few homes. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the post office moved to a new store near the train station and kept the name Sperry.
From 1982 to 1989, a building called the Sperry WPA armory was important. It was the main office for a new part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. This group was called the 45th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. They were known for flying special helicopters at night using night vision goggles. This unit later became the 1-245th Aviation Regiment. It is now located at a different complex near Tulsa.
