What is the Spices Board of India?
The Spices Board is an important agency set up by the Government of India. Its main job is to look after Indian spices. It helps farmers grow spices like cardamom and pepper. It also makes sure that spices sent to other countries are of the best quality. The head of the board is called a Chairman. This person has a high rank, similar to a Joint Secretary in the Indian government.
How the Spices Board Started
The Spices Board was created in 1987. It was formed under a special law called the Spices Board Act of 1986. Its main goals were to help grow and develop cardamom. It also had the job of promoting the export of 52 different spices listed in the law.
Ensuring Spice Quality
The Spices Board has modern testing labs. The main lab is at its headquarters in Kochi. There are also other labs in cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Tuticorin, Kandla, and Guntur. These labs are very important. They do mandatory quality checks for all spices that India exports. This ensures that spices sent abroad are safe and meet international standards.
Learning About Spices
The Spices Board also helps people learn more about India's rich spice heritage. They started an online campaign called the "Spice Train." This campaign teaches Indians about the history and importance of spices in their country. The board also provides lots of information about different spices grown and exported from India.
Spice Parks and Products
The Spices Board has special places called Spice Parks. One such park for cardamom and pepper is located in Puttady. These parks help in the development and processing of spices. The Spices Board also has its own store next to its main office in Kochi. Here, they sell spices under their brand name, 'Flavourit'.
