What is Splendid Geyser?
Splendid Geyser is part of a group of geysers called the Daisy Group. A geyser is a hot spring that shoots out water and steam from time to time. Splendid Geyser's eruptions are not very common. They can be hard to predict unless the geyser is already active.
How High Does it Erupt?
When Splendid Geyser does erupt, its fountain of water can shoot up very high. It can reach an amazing height of 200 feet (about 60 meters)! That's as tall as a 20-story building!
When Does Splendid Geyser Erupt?
Splendid Geyser's eruptions are very rare. Sometimes, many years can pass between its eruptions. For example, it was very active in the early to mid-1970s. Then it became active again in 1992. Its last known activity was in 1997. Eruptions usually last between 1 and 9 minutes.
Why Does it Erupt?
Eruptions are more likely to happen when the air pressure drops. This often happens during a storm. Lower air pressure can make the water around the geyser boil more easily. This helps trigger an eruption.
Splendid Geyser and Daisy Geyser
Splendid Geyser has a close connection with another geyser called Daisy Geyser. Usually, when Daisy Geyser is active, Splendid Geyser is quiet. And when Daisy Geyser takes a break, Splendid Geyser often becomes very active!
Dual Eruptions: A Rare Show
Sometimes, something very special happens. Both Splendid Geyser and Daisy Geyser can erupt at the same time! This is called a "dual eruption" or a "concert eruption." During these rare events, both geysers are much stronger than usual. Splendid Geyser can even shoot up to 250 feet high! These amazing dual eruptions can last from 30 to 120 minutes.
Recent Activity
Splendid Geyser has not erupted since May 13, 1998. Scientists and visitors are always watching, hoping to see its next magnificent display.
