What's in a Name? The History of Sprimont's Name
The name Sprimont is very old. The first time it was written down was in the years 855 and 856 AD. These old records can be found in the Abbey of Stavelot.
It's not completely clear where the name Sprimont comes from. Some historians think it might be the name of a place. Others believe it could have come from a person's name.
Over more than 1,100 years, the spelling of Sprimont has changed a bit. For example, in 888 AD, it was spelled "Sprismonte." By 1049, it was "Sprismont." But since about the year 1000 AD, the spelling "Sprimont" has been used most often.
Many experts agree that the end part of the name, -mont, comes from the Latin word mons or montis. This word usually means "hill" or "mountain." However, some places with -mont in their name are not on hills. This makes the meaning a bit tricky. Another idea is that mons might have meant a resting place for travelers in Roman times.
The first part of the name, spri-, is even more of a mystery. Its origin is very old and not well known. Some old documents suggest it might come from Latin words like spiris or spers. One strong idea is that spri means "lance" or "spear."
So, putting it all together, the name Sprimont could mean "Mounted Warrior" (if it's active) or "Lance of Defense" (if it's passive). This comes from the idea of "mont de Spiris," which means "hill of the spear."
