Springbrook is a small community located within the city of Newberg, in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own local government separate from the larger city or county it's part of.
The community was first named "Hoskins." This name came from an early settler in the area, Cyrus E. Hoskins. However, when a post office was opened on June 30, 1893, the name was changed to Springbrook. This change happened because there was already another town called Hoskins, Oregon in Benton County, and they wanted to avoid confusion. The new name, Springbrook, was inspired by Cyrus Hoskins' farm. The Springbrook post office served the community for many years before it finally closed in 1961.
Where is Springbrook?
Most of the Springbrook area has now become part of the eastern side of the city of Newberg. Even though it's part of Newberg, the name "Springbrook" is still used for many places in the area.
You'll find businesses, streets, and even housing developments named after the former community. For example, there's Springbrook Plaza, which is a shopping area. There's also Springbrook Oaks, a housing development that started being built in 2004. Springbrook Road is a major street that runs through eastern Newberg.
Schools in Springbrook
The history of schools in the Springbrook area is quite interesting! The very first school was called Gibbs School District 35, and it was set up in the early 1860s.
It wasn't until 1886 that Springbrook got its own school district. District 56, which had been established between 1874 and 1876, was moved to the Springbrook area. This happened because the school in District 56 wasn't being kept up very well. Soon, this new district became known as Springbrook School District 56. It was formed by taking parts of other school areas, including some from Gibbs in 1888.
Springbrook School District continued to operate until 1962. At that time, it joined with the nearby Newberg School District. The most recent school building, which was built in 1935, is still standing today, but it is currently empty.
In 1981, Springbrook Middle School was built. Even though it was located in Springbrook, it was part of the Newberg School District. For a while, Springbrook Middle School and Renne Middle School were the only two middle schools in the area.
However, in the fall of 1995, big changes happened. The students and staff from Springbrook Middle School moved to a brand-new building called Chehalem Valley Middle School. At the same time, the students and staff from Renne Middle School, which had to close because of asbestos, moved into the old Springbrook Middle School building. For a short time, this school was informally called Renne-brook, until it was officially named Mountain View Middle School.
