History of Srikalahasti
The name Srikalahasti comes from three Sanskrit words: Sri (meaning spider), Kala (meaning snake), and Hasti (meaning elephant). A long time ago, a spider, a snake, and an elephant all worshipped the Shiva lingam (a holy symbol) here. They were so devoted that they found spiritual freedom.
There's another old story about how Srikalahasti got its name. Two powerful beings, Vayu (the god of wind) and Adishesha (a giant snake), had an argument about who was stronger. To prove his power, Adishesha wrapped himself around Mount Kailash. Vayu then tried to blow him away with strong winds. This caused eight pieces of Mount Kailash to break off and fall in different places. Srikalahasti is one of those eight special places.
