Chittoor is an important city in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the main city and administrative center for the district. Chittoor is home to about 153,756 people. If you include the nearby areas, the total population is around 175,647.

What Does the Name Chittoor Mean?
The name Chittoor comes from two words: "Chit" and "Oor." In both Tamil and Telugu languages, "Chit" means "small," and "Oor" means "town" or "village." So, Chittoor means "small town" or "small village."
Long ago, Chittoor was a busy trading spot between areas where Tamil and Telugu were spoken. This is why its name uses words from both languages.
A Look Back at Chittoor's History
After India became independent in 1947, Chittoor was part of the Madras State. The area we now call Chittoor district used to be known as the North Arcot district. The British created this district in the 1800s, with Chittoor as its main town.
On April 1, 1911, the district was divided into two parts: Chittoor district and North Arcot district.
Ancient Times in Chittoor
Many very old sites have been found in the Chittoor district. Tools from the Stone Age have been discovered in places like Tirupathi and Piler. These tools show how early people lived and developed.
Even older tools from the New Stone Age were found near Bangarupalem. Evidence of ancient burial sites, called megalithic graves, has also been found in areas like Irulabanda and Valimikipuram. These discoveries help us understand the history of human life in this region.
Where is Chittoor Located?
Chittoor city is in the southernmost part of Andhra Pradesh. It sits on the banks of the Neeva River. The city is located along major roads, NH 69 and NH 40. These highways connect Chittoor to big cities like Bangalore and Chennai.
Chittoor is surrounded by other districts and states. To the east is Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh. To the south are districts in Tamil Nadu like Krishnagiri and Vellore. To the west is Kolar district in Karnataka, and to the north is Annamayya district in Andhra Pradesh.
The district covers an area of 15,150 square kilometers. This makes it the eighth largest district in Andhra Pradesh. Many parts of the district are mountainous, with an average height of about 2500 feet above sea level. Chennai is about 150 km away, and Bangalore is about 165 km away. Vellore is the closest city, just 30 km across the border in Tamil Nadu.

People and Languages in Chittoor
As of the 2011 census, Chittoor has a population of 212,816 people. There are slightly more females than males, with 1002 females for every 1000 males. This is a bit higher than the state average. Most people in Chittoor can read and write, with a literacy rate of 90.60%.
Telugu is the main and official language spoken here. A large number of people also speak Tamil.
How Chittoor is Governed
The Chittoor Municipal Corporation is the local government body that manages the city. It started as a smaller municipality in 1917. Over the years, as the city grew, its status was upgraded several times.
In 2012, Chittoor became a full municipal corporation. This happened when 14 nearby villages (called gram panchayats) joined the city area. Now, the corporation manages an area of about 69.75 square kilometers.

Roads
Chittoor is well-connected to other major cities by national and state highways.
- National Highway 40 (India) connects Chittoor to Kadapa and Kurnool to the north, and to Vellore and Chennai to the south.
- National Highway 69 (India) links Chittoor with Kolar and Bangalore to the west.
- National Highway 140 (India) connects Chittoor to Tirupati and Nellore to the east.
The city has a total road length of 382.30 km.

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation runs many bus services from the Chittoor bus station. You can take a bus from Chittoor to many towns and cities. Railways
Chittoor railway station is the city's train station. It is part of the Gudur–Katpadi branch line. This station is managed by the Guntakal railway division of the South Central Railway zone. The closest major railway junction is Katpadi Junction railway station in Tamil Nadu, which is about 30 km south of Chittoor.
Many trains pass through Chittoor daily. You can find direct trains to cities like Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Mysore. There are also weekly or bi-weekly trains connecting Chittoor to places like Jammu, Mangalore, and Kolkata.
