What's in a Name?
The name Nellore has a couple of interesting stories behind it. One old story says the name comes from a special stone found under a nelli tree. A nelli tree is also known as an Indian gooseberry tree.
However, most people believe the name "Nellore" comes from the Tamil word "nellu," which means "paddy" or "rice." This area is famous for growing lots of rice, so the name shows how important rice farming is here. Over time, the name "Nelluru" changed to "Nellore."
Long ago, when the Chola dynasty ruled, the area was called Vikrama Simhapuri. But because there were so many rice fields, the name eventually changed to Nellore. Even today, farming, especially rice growing, is a big part of Nellore's economy.
A Glimpse into Nellore's Past
Nellore has been ruled by many different powerful groups throughout history. These include the Mauryas, Satavahanas, Cholas, Pallavas, Pandyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and the Arcot Nawabs.
Around 3rd century BCE, Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty ruled Nellore. Later, the Pallava dynasty took over until the 6th century CE. After that, the Chola rulers governed Nellore for a long time, until the 13th century CE. It then became part of other empires like the Kakatiyas and the Vijayanagara Empire.
In the 18th century, the British took control of Nellore from the Arcot Nawabs. It then became part of the Madras Presidency under British India. Nellore played an important part in the development of the Telugu language. It also helped in forming the state of Andhra Pradesh. Potti Sriramulu, a famous freedom fighter who went on a hunger strike until his death for the creation of Andhra Pradesh, was from Nellore.
