St. Albans, Missouri facts for kids
St. Albans is a small, unincorporated community located in the northeastern part of Franklin County, Missouri, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
St. Albans is about five miles northeast of Labadie and seven miles west of Wildwood. It sits on higher ground, away from the Missouri River floodplain. A small part of St. Charles County also borders St. Albans. This part of St. Charles County is unusual because it's on the south side of the Missouri River, unlike the rest of that county.
History of St. Albans
St. Albans was founded a long time ago, in 1837. It was named after a city in England, which is also called St. Albans.
Famous Visitors and Historic Places
St. Albans is home to some very old and important places. The St. Albans General Store and the St. Albans Farms Stone Barn are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places protected for their history.
Another historic spot is Tavern Cave. This cave was visited by the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition many years ago. During their journey, Meriwether Lewis had a close call here, almost falling down the bluffs near the cave.
The expedition's journals also mention a powerful whirlpool in the river, which they called the Devil's Raceground. Today, this area is dry land because the river's path has changed over time. This dry land is now the part of St. Charles County that is on the south side of the river.
Education in St. Albans
For a while, St. Albans was home to The Fulton School at St. Albans. This was a private school that used the Montessori teaching method. It welcomed students from 18 months old all the way up to 12th grade.
