St. Christopher's Cathedral (which is Catedral de San Cristóbal de Barcelona in Spanish) is a very important church. It is the main cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Barcelona in Venezuela. You can find it in the old part of the city of Barcelona. This city is the capital of Anzoátegui State in northwest Venezuela.
History of the Cathedral
The church's story began in 1748 when the local parish was first set up. But the actual church building was not officially opened until 1773. This happened after many Spanish settlers had moved to the area.
Special Relics and Remains
The main altar of the cathedral holds special items called relics. These are believed to be parts of at least seven different saints. These saints include San Severino, St. Eustatius, Saint Facundo, Saint Pedro Alcantara, Saint Pacific, Saint Anastasius, and Saint Pascual Bailon.
A few years later, in 1777, a special event happened. The Bishop of Puerto Rico, named Manuel Jiménez Pérez, brought something very important to the church from Rome. He brought the remains of St. Celestine. These remains were placed inside a beautiful, fancy container called a reliquary. This reliquary is kept in a small chapel on the left side of the church.
