St. Mary's Academy is a private Catholic school in New Orleans, Louisiana. It teaches students from pre-kindergarten all the way to 12th grade. The school is run by the Sisters of the Holy Family. It was started in 1867, making it one of the oldest Catholic schools for Black students in the United States.
The school welcomes both girls and boys up to the 7th grade. For grades 8 through 12, only girls attend. St. Mary's Academy has a long history of preparing young women for college.

School History
The school was founded in 1867 by the Sisters of the Holy Family. This group was the second religious order for Black Catholic women in the United States. They created the school so that Black children could get an education during a time when schools were separated by race. The founder of the order, Venerable Henriette DeLille, was a Creole of color. She is now highly respected within the Catholic Church.
Moving to New Locations
St. Mary's Academy has moved twice since it began. It first started in the French Quarter, a historic part of New Orleans. This was right next to the sisters' home. After 14 years, the school moved to a different spot in the same neighborhood. In 1965, it moved to its current location in New Orleans East.
Rebuilding After Hurricane Katrina
After Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of damage to the old building, the school built a brand-new facility. The new building was finished in 2011. It also started accepting male students in the lower grades at this time.
New Leadership
In September 2022, the school announced that Pamela M. Rogers was hired as its first president who was not a nun.
Amazing Math Discovery
In 2023, two students from St. Mary's Academy made an amazing discovery. Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson each found new ways to prove the Pythagorean theorem. This math rule is about the sides of a right triangle. For 2,000 years, people thought it was impossible to prove this theorem using trigonometry.
These students were featured on many news shows, including 60 Minutes. Their proofs were later published in a math journal called The American Mathematical Monthly.
School Sports
St. Mary's Academy has sports teams that compete in the LHSAA. Their teams are known as the Cougars.
