St Andrew's Roundhay is a church located in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is an active United Reformed Church. The church building and its Sunday school are very important. They are listed as a Grade II listed building. This means they are historically or architecturally special and protected.
History of the Church
St Andrew's Roundhay was first known as Roundhay Congregational Church. It was designed by an architect named W H Beevers. He used a style called Gothic Revival. This style looks like old medieval churches.
The first part of the church, called the School Church, began construction in November 1901. The church officially started in February 1902 with 29 members. The foundation stone for the main church building was laid in 1907. The church officially opened its doors in 1908.
In 1972, the church changed its name. It became St Andrew's Roundhay United Reformed Church.
What the Church Looks Like
The church is built from strong, rough stone called gritstone. It has a red tile roof. The church has a tall, thin tower with three sections. The Sunday school building is connected to the north side of the church.
Inside, the main part of the church, called the nave, has five sections. It has an open wooden roof and wooden panels on the walls. The large window at the east end of the church shows a picture. It tells the story of the parable of the Good Samaritan. This window was made in 1907.
Friends Around the World
St Andrew's Roundhay has special connections with churches in Germany. They have a partnership with the Lutherkirche in Frankenthal. They also work with the Martinskirche in Bernburg. These partnerships help the churches share ideas and support each other.
