The Hall's Story: A Look Back in Time
How the Hall Began
The St Andrew's Church Hall was built in 1906 for the local Anglican church community in Toogoolawah. It was first located on land owned by Mary Elizabeth McConnel. She was a very important person from a nearby property called Cressbrook.
Today, the original spot where the hall stood is an empty block of land. The hall itself was moved to its current location, right next to the church.
How Toogoolawah Grew
The town of Toogoolawah was once known as Cressbrook Creek. It started to grow when Mary McConnel's husband, J.H. McConnel, divided up a big part of their Cressbrook land in the late 1890s. He also built a factory there in 1898 that made condensed milk.
The town became even bigger when the Brisbane Valley railway line was finished in 1904. This railway connected Toogoolawah to Ipswich, making it easier for people and goods to travel.
Who Built and Paid for the Hall?
It is thought that Mary McConnel paid for the hall to be built. The builder was probably A.D. Menzies, who built many of the buildings in Toogoolawah until the mid-1920s.
The Archbishop officially opened the hall in September 1906. For a few years, Anglican church services were held there.
From Church to Sunday School
Later, a new church, St Andrew's Church, was built between 1911 and 1912. After the new church was finished, the hall became the Sunday School hall.
In 1920, the church bought both the hall and the land from Mrs. McConnel for £100. Since then, the building has been moved and changed a few times.
What the Hall Looks Like
This timber building has only one floor and is surrounded by old, tall trees. It sits on a corner, next to McConnel Park. St Andrew's Church is on one side, and St Andrew's rectory (the church's house) is on the other.
The hall has a roof made of corrugated iron that comes to a point, called a gabled roof. There's also a smaller roof at the back over the kitchenette and a gabled roof over the front porch. The outside of the hall is painted a dark color, just like St Andrew's Church. It stands on timber stumps.
The front porch has a solid weatherboard fence, called a balustrade. It also has a fancy timber design at the front with a metal decoration on top, called a finial. The windows now have glass louvres, which are like adjustable slats. The timber parts are painted white.
Inside, the walls and ceiling are covered with a material called fibrous cement sheeting.
