History of St Barnabas' Church

A talented architect named C. C. Townsend designed St Barnabas' Church. Building work began in 1867. The church was officially opened on October 22, 1868, by Bishop Trower.

A man named Samuel Fox helped pay for the church. He was famous for inventing the "Paragon" umbrella frame. He gave £100 towards the building costs.

Building the Tower and Spire

The foundation for the church's tower was laid on August 3, 1888. A company called Naylor and Tait from Derby designed the tower. Alfred Hill of Tideswell was given the job to build it. The tower and its clock were finished and opened on July 15, 1889. The tall, pointed top part of the church, called the spire, was completed in 1891.
