St Peter’s Church, Hope is a very old and important church in Hope, Derbyshire. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it is protected because of its special history and architecture. It belongs to the Church of England.
Records from the Domesday Book show that there was a church in Hope a very long time ago. The church building you see today, St Peter's Church, was mostly built in the 1300s and 1400s. Some parts, like the chancel, were updated later in 1882.
The church grounds have two very old crosses. One is a tall sandstone cross from the Anglo-Saxon period. It stands seven feet high and has carvings on all sides. This cross might have always been in the churchyard. A stone base that could have been its original stand now holds a sundial. For many years, from the English Civil War until 1858, this cross was hidden in the village school. Another old cross stump, called the Eccles Cross, is also in the graveyard. It used to be near Eccles House, south of Hope.

History of the Church Building

Early Changes (1700s)
Between 1728 and 1730, the church had some big repairs. During this time, the tower was rebuilt.
Later Updates (1800s)
More work was done in 1887 by Alfred Hill. New windows were put in, and the floor was relaid. A new clock with chimes was also added to the tower.
In 1908, the chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was restored by Charles Hadfield. Five beautiful stained glass windows were added then.
