St Peter’s Church is a very old parish church located in the village of Hope, Derbyshire, in England. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it is considered so important to England's history that it has special protection.

A church has stood on this spot for over 900 years. The famous Domesday Book, a huge survey of England from 1086, mentions a church in Hope. However, the building you can see today was mostly built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

In 2011, some valuable historical items were taken from the church. These included silver cups, called chalices, and a special plate made of pewter (a type of metal). Some of these items were hundreds of years old.

A Look Back in Time

The main parts of St Peter's Church were built between the 1300s and 1400s. Over the centuries, the church has been repaired and updated several times to keep it in good condition.

Major Restorations

Between 1728 and 1730, the church's tower was rebuilt. Much later, in 1887, another big restoration took place. During this time, new windows were put in, the floor was replaced, and a new clock with chimes was added to the tower.

In 1908, the chancel (the area around the altar) was restored. As part of this work, five beautiful stained glass windows were installed.

Treasures in the Churchyard

The grounds of St Peter's Church hold some amazing historical objects. There are two ancient stone crosses.

One is an Anglo-Saxon cross. The Anglo-Saxons were people who lived in England a very long time ago. The stone shaft of this cross is seven feet tall and has carvings on all its sides. For many years, from the English Civil War until 1858, the cross was hidden at the village school to keep it safe.

Another piece of history in the churchyard is the stump of the Eccles Cross. It was originally located near a place called Eccles House, south of the village.

The Church Community

St Peter's Church is part of the Church of England and serves the local community. It shares its duties with two other nearby churches:

Music at the Church

The church has a large pipe organ that was built in 1883 by a company called Brindley & Foster. A pipe organ creates sound by forcing air through pipes of different sizes. This beautiful instrument was first played in the church on November 23, 1883.
