History and Design of St Bride's
Building the Church
A person named Samuel Rowland designed St Bride's Church. The building work started on August 29, 1829. The church was officially opened on December 29, 1830. It was built for Reverend James Haldane Stewart.
Architectural Style and Features
St Bride's Church is a Grade II* listed building. This means it is a very important historic place. Many people think it is the best example of Neoclassical style in Liverpool. Neoclassical means it looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings.
The church looks a bit like an ancient temple. It has a large entrance with six tall columns on the west side. These columns are called Ionic columns. The east window has beautiful stained glass. It was put in around 1905 and has a Renaissance style.
Inside the church, there is a special monument. It remembers Reverend Stewart, who passed away in 1854. There is also another monument for Mr. W.M. Foster, his wife, and their servant. They all sadly drowned in a shipwreck in 1831. The ship was called the Rothsay Castle.
