The Georgian Quarter is a special part of Liverpool city centre in England. It's famous for its beautiful old homes. These homes were built in a style called Georgian architecture. This means they were made when King George was on the throne.

This area is sometimes called Canning or the Canning Georgian Quarter. It gets its name from Canning Street. This street was named after George Canning (1770–1827). He was an important British politician. He even served as Prime Minister for a short time.

The Georgian Quarter is also part of Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter. It is surrounded by other interesting areas. To the north is the rest of the Knowledge Quarter. To the south is Toxteth. Edge Hill is to the east. To the west are Ropewalks, Chinatown, and the Baltic Triangle.

History of the Georgian Quarter

In the year 1800, a plan was made for this area. John Foster, Sr. (1758–1827) was the surveyor for the Liverpool Corporation. He designed a grid of streets for a boggy area called Mosslake Fields. This land was just east of Rodney Street.

The homes built here were for Liverpool's richest people. They wanted grand houses in a nice part of the city. However, in the 1900s, Liverpool faced some tough times. The Georgian Quarter became less popular. Many buildings were left empty or fell apart. Some areas, like parts of Upper Parliament Street, Grove Street, and Myrtle Street, were even pulled down.

Things started to get better in the 1990s. People began to see the beauty of these old homes again. Today, the Georgian Quarter is a very popular place to live. Many of the old buildings have been restored.

The story of how this area changed was shown in a TV show. It was a 2018 BBC Two documentary series called A House Through Time. The historian David Olusoga looked into the lives of people who lived at 62 Falkner Street. He researched their stories from 1841 up to today.

Where is the Georgian Quarter?
