Discovering St Chad's Church: Its Story and Design
How St Chad's Church Was Built
St Chad's Church was designed by a famous architect named John Douglas. He was from Chester. The church was built in 1881. It is made mostly from red brick. The upper parts of the church have special timber framing, which means wooden beams are visible. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
Unique Features of the Church
The church has a unique shape. It has a main area called a nave and a smaller section called a chancel. These parts are joined together. On top of the church, there is an eight-sided tower called a flèche. This flèche sits right between the nave and the chancel. There is also a vestry (a room for changing robes) on the south side. An extra room for the organ is on the north side. A historian named Nikolaus Pevsner said the church is "certainly an ingenious and entertaining building." This means he thought it was very clever and interesting.
St Chad's Church Today
St Chad's Church is still a very active place. It holds regular church services every Sunday. Throughout the week, the church also hosts different events. These events are for both adults and children in the community.
