St Clair is a suburb located in Adelaide, South Australia. It is looked after by the City of Charles Sturt. The name St Clair was first officially recorded for this area on November 6, 2012. The suburb is surrounded by Cheltenham Parade, Torrens Road, Woodville Road, and the Outer Harbor train line. Before new houses were built here, it was home to the Cheltenham Park Racecourse.
A Look at St Clair's History
The name "St Clair" was chosen because of the history of the land around it. A person named Robert Richard Torrens first used the name for a house he built in the area around 1842. In 1850, that first house was taken down. A much bigger house, also called "St Clair," was then built near what is now Woodville Road. This grander house stood until the middle of the 1900s.
Modern Development
In 2007, the South Australian Jockey Club made a deal with building companies called AVJennings and Urban Pacific. They agreed to turn the old Cheltenham Park Racecourse into a new housing area.
The St Clair Village shopping centre officially opened on May 1, 2013. The Premier of South Australia at the time, Jay Weatherill, was there for the opening. The centre has a Coles Supermarket and ten other shops. Work on the new St Clair train station began in June 2013. The station, which is on the Outer Harbor railway line, opened for use on February 23, 2014.
