History of the Church
How Old is St Edmund's Church?
This church is very old, dating back to around the year 1300. Imagine how many people have visited it over the centuries!
Changes Over Time
The church has been updated and repaired many times. Between 1847 and 1850, it was restored by architects Henry Isaac Stevens and Frederick Josias Robinson. This means they fixed parts of it to make it look new again.
The tall tower on the west side of the church was rebuilt in 1864. Later, in 1892, beautiful new stained glass windows were added. These were designed by an artist named Edward Reginald Frampton.
Special Features Inside
Inside the church, you can see a stone screen from the 1500s. There are also special tombs from the Elizabethan era. These belong to Thomas Beresford, who passed away in 1473, and his wife. Their statues on the tombs are wrapped in shrouds. This might be because the sculptor did not know what they looked like.
