St Ildierna's Church is a historic parish church in the village of Lansallos, Cornwall, England. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it is considered very important to the nation's history. The church was built in the 14th century and is famous for its beautiful wooden benches from the 1500s.

In 2005, a fire badly damaged the church, especially its roof.

History of the Church

The church was officially dedicated, or opened, way back in 1331. It is named after St. Ildierna.

In the 15th century, a writer named William Worcester visited the area. He wrote that the remains of a male bishop named St. Hyldren were kept in the church. However, other historical records suggest the church's special saint was actually a woman. The feast day for St. Hyldren was celebrated on February 1.

In its early days, the church was supported by a local noble family, the Hywysches. They lived nearby at a home called "Rathwylle" and even had their own small chapel there.

Cool Features Inside

St Ildierna's has many interesting things to see. The church has beautifully carved wooden roofs that look like the inside of a covered wagon. It also has a square-shaped font (a basin for holy water) from the Norman period. This font is decorated with a carving of the "tree of life."

Famous Benches

One of the most special features is the collection of benches, also called pews, from the 16th century. There are 34 of these old benches still in the church. They have detailed carvings on their ends, which show amazing craftsmanship from hundreds of years ago.

Ancient Memorials

The church has a rare memorial tablet made from slate. It was created to remember a woman named Margaret Smith, who died in 1579. The tablet was carved by a skilled stonemason (a person who cuts and builds with stone) named Peter Crocker.

Repairs and Changes

The church was repaired and restored between 1883 and 1884. More work was done in the early 20th century by an architect named Edmund Harold Sedding.

In 1938, a set of eight new bells was installed in the church tower. This was organized by the church's leader at the time, Reverend N. Rivers-Tippett.

The 2005 Fire

Sadly, in 2005, a fire broke out in one of the side aisles of the church. The fire caused a lot of damage to the historic building, particularly to the roof.

The Church Organ

The church used to have a pipe organ made by a company called Heard and Son. This organ is no longer in the building.
