The History of St. James's Church
How the Church Was Built
The first stone for St. James's Church was put in place on 27 September 1844. A clever architect named Edwin Hugh Shellard designed the building. The church was officially opened and blessed on 8 September 1846 by the Bishop of Lichfield. This blessing is called "consecration" and it means the church is set apart for holy use.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, the church has been made bigger and better. In 1897, a part of the church called the "chancel" was made larger by architects Naylor and Sale. The chancel is the area near the altar where the clergy (like priests) sit. Around the year 1900, a "vestry" was added. A vestry is a room where the clergy get ready for services and where church items are stored.
A Special Building Status
In 2000, St. James's Church was given a special title: a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected. It shows that the church has special architectural or historical value.
The Church Organ
Inside St. James's Church, there is a beautiful pipe organ. This organ was made in 1859 by a company called Forster and Andrews. You can find all the details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register, which keeps records of organs across the country.
