A Look Back at St James' Church
Building the Church
St James' Church is on Malcolm Street in Normanton, Derby. Its first stone was placed on June 18, 1866. A church leader called Archdeacon Thomas Hill did this. The church was designed by Joseph Peacock. He was an architect from London. William Huddlestone from Lincoln was the builder.
The building work happened very quickly. The church was officially opened on December 27, 1866. The Bishop of Lichfield led this special event. However, the church's tower and spire were not finished yet.
Changes Over Time
In 1996, four church areas joined together. These were St Thomas', St Augustine's, St Chad's, and St James'. They formed a new larger area called Walbrook Epiphany. Today, the St James' Church building has a new use. It is now leased out as the Alter Rock climbing centre.
The Church Organ
About the Organ
A large musical instrument called an organ was put into the church. It was made by a company called Brindley & Foster. People first heard it played on Easter Sunday in 1874. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register. The organ is no longer inside the building.
People Who Played the Organ
Many talented people played the organ at St James' Church. Here are some of them:
- W.H. Orme played around 1881.
- Henry Jasper Boulderstone played until 1916.
- Frederick J. Stevenson played from 1918 to 1944. He later became the organist at St John the Evangelist's Church, Derby.
