St. John the Baptist's Church is a very old church in the village of Clowne, Derbyshire, England. It is a Church of England parish church. This church, along with a medieval cross nearby, is the oldest building in the village. It is so important that it has a special heritage status called Grade II* listed.
A Look at the Church's History
This church was built a very long time ago, in the year 1138. When it was first built, it was called "All Saints." It stood on a main road that connected the towns of Mansfield and Worksop Priory.
Not long after it was built, the church's name was changed to St John the Baptist. The first leader of the church, called a rector, was John M. Leyaster, who was recorded in 1299. Over many centuries, there have been 49 rectors serving the church.
The tall tower of the church was built in the 15th century. Bells were added to the tower at different times. The first bell was put in place in 1591, another in 1616, and the last one in 1812.
In 1955, the church was made bigger. New spaces were added for the choir, the altar area, and the organ. Around this time, two extra chapels were created on the side. One was a special chapel for children, and the other was a chapel for miners. This miners' chapel remembers the men who sadly lost their lives in the Creswell Colliery Disaster in 1950.
The church also has beautiful stained glass windows. You can also see two paintings by an artist named Jean Baptiste Butatte. These paintings are called "The Ten Commandments" and "The Ascension." One of the stained glass windows in the chapel also remembers the Creswell Colliery disaster.
The Church Organ
The church has an organ, which is a large musical instrument. You can find out more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
The Church Bells
The tower of St. John the Baptist's Church has a set of six bells. These bells were made in 1932 by a company called Mears and Stainbank.
