St Mary's Church, Greasley is a beautiful and historic church located in Greasley, Nottinghamshire, England. It is part of the Church of England. This church is considered very important because of its special design and long history. It is officially listed as a Grade II listed building.

History of St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church was first built a very long time ago, in the middle of the 1400s. This means it is a medieval church, from the Middle Ages. Over the years, the church has been repaired and updated many times.

It was restored in 1753, 1772, and 1832. A big restoration happened in 1882, which is known as a Victorian restoration. This means it was updated during the time Queen Victoria was on the throne.

Later, the ground beneath the church started to sink because of mining nearby. This caused the church's tower to pull away from the main parts of the building. Because of this damage, most of the church had to be rebuilt in 1896. This major rebuilding project cost about £2,000 at the time.

One of the oldest parts of the church is its font. A font is a special basin used for baptisms. This font is even older than the church itself, dating back to the 1300s.

Special Features of the Church

Beautiful Stained Glass

The church has some small pieces of beautiful stained glass. These colorful glass pieces came from a nearby old monastery called Beauvale Charterhouse. Stained glass windows often tell stories or show pictures from the Bible.

The Church Organ

St Mary's Church has a large musical instrument called a pipe organ. This organ was made by a company called Charles Lloyd in Nottingham in 1910. It was a generous gift from a person named Major Thomas Philip Barber. You can find out more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.

Important Memorials

Inside the church, you can find memorials. A memorial is something that helps people remember someone important who has passed away. In the north-west corner of the church tower, there is a memorial for Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne.
