History of St. Mary's Church
Building the Church
St. Mary's Church was built a long time ago, between 1838 and 1839. An architect named J.G. Jackson designed it. It took about two years to complete this beautiful church.
Church Properties Over Time
Over the years, the church has owned different buildings. In 1897, a house for the vicar, called a vicarage, was bought. It was located at 15 St Mary's Road. The current vicarage, number 28, is also on the same street as the church.
In the 1970s, the church received a large property called "Southlands." This property was sold. With the money, they bought an old warehouse. This warehouse used to be part of a brewery.
The Maltings Youth Centre
The old brewery warehouse was named The Maltings. It was turned into a youth centre for the church. This centre was called "The Landing Stage." It was a place for young people to gather.
Later, The Maltings building was sold. It was then changed into homes by a group called the Orbit Group. The church also built a new church hall. This hall was finished in 1996.
