The Church of St Mary in Moorlinch, Somerset, England, is a very old and special building. It was built a long, long time ago, in the 13th century. This church is so important that it's officially called a Grade I listed building. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in England! You can find it on the southern side of the Polden Hills.
A Journey Through Time
The Church of St Mary has a very long history. People first mentioned a church in Moorlinch way back in the year 725. Later, it was mentioned again in 971. These early mentions show how old this church truly is.
In 1262, a famous monastery called Glastonbury Abbey took ownership of the church. This was a big deal at the time. The church has changed over hundreds of years.
What's Inside the Church
The church has many interesting parts. The chancel, which is the area around the altar, was built in the 14th century. The main part of the church, called the nave, is even older, dating back to the 12th century. It also has a south porch.
You can see a font from the 12th century, which is used for baptisms. The pulpit, where sermons are given, is from the Jacobean period. It was made from older wooden panels. The church also has an organ that was built in 1800 by James Davis.
The Church Bells
The tall tower on the west side of the church holds six bells. The oldest bell is called the tenor bell. It was made in 1651 by Thomas Purdue in Closworth. Imagine how many times these bells have rung over the centuries!
