St Mary's Church, Clapham, also known as Our Immaculate Lady of Victories, is a Roman Catholic church in Clapham, South London, England. It is located on Clapham Park Road, right by Clapham Common and near Clapham Common tube station. This church is considered a very important historical building, known as a Grade II*-listed site.
The church is managed by the Redemptorist Congregation, a group of priests and brothers. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark, which is a large area of Catholic churches in South London.
An important person who used to work here is Ralph Heskett. He was the parish priest at St Mary's from 1999 to 2008. He is now a Bishop in Hallam. The current parish priest at St Mary's is Father Caspar Mukabva.
The Church Building's History
The idea for the current St Mary's Church came from Bishop Nicholas Wiseman. He later became a Cardinal, which is a very high rank in the Catholic Church.
Building Design and Completion
The first stone for the church was placed in 1849, marking the start of its construction. The church was designed by an architect named William Wardell. He used a style called Gothic Revival. This style brings back the look of medieval Gothic churches, with pointed arches and tall windows.
The building was finished in 1851. Cardinal Wiseman officially blessed the church on May 14, 1851. This blessing is a special ceremony to dedicate a building for religious use.
Historic Status
Because of its unique design and history, St Mary's Church was given a special status on February 8, 1979. It was added to the National Heritage List for England. This means it's recognized as a very important historical building that needs to be protected.
