The Church Building's History

The idea for the current St Mary's Church came from Bishop Nicholas Wiseman. He later became a Cardinal, which is a very high rank in the Catholic Church.

Building Design and Completion

The first stone for the church was placed in 1849, marking the start of its construction. The church was designed by an architect named William Wardell. He used a style called Gothic Revival. This style brings back the look of medieval Gothic churches, with pointed arches and tall windows.

The building was finished in 1851. Cardinal Wiseman officially blessed the church on May 14, 1851. This blessing is a special ceremony to dedicate a building for religious use.

Historic Status

Because of its unique design and history, St Mary's Church was given a special status on February 8, 1979. It was added to the National Heritage List for England. This means it's recognized as a very important historical building that needs to be protected.
