St Mary's Church, Greasley is an old and important church in Greasley, Nottinghamshire, England. It is part of the Church of England. This building is so special that it is officially listed as a Grade II listed building. This means it has great historical or architectural value.

A Look Back in Time: History of the Church

This church is very old, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was first built in the mid-1400s. Over the years, the church has been repaired and updated many times.

Some early repairs happened in 1753, 1772, and 1832. A big restoration, or major repair, took place in 1882. This was during the Victorian era, a time when many old churches were updated.

Later, in 1896, the church needed a huge rebuild. This was because the ground underneath had shifted due to mining. This shifting caused the church's tower to pull away from the main part of the building. Almost the entire church had to be rebuilt, costing about £2,000 at the time.

Even older than the church itself is its Baptismal font. This is a special bowl used for baptisms. It dates back to the 1300s, which is even before the church was built!

Beautiful Stained Glass Windows

Inside the church, you can find some beautiful pieces of stained glass. These are colorful glass windows that tell stories or show pictures. Some of these glass pieces came from a nearby old monastery called Beauvale Charterhouse.

The Church Organ

St Mary's Church has a large pipe organ. This is a musical instrument that makes sound using air blown through many pipes. The organ was made in 1910 by a company called Charles Lloyd from Nottingham. It was a gift to the church from a person named Major Thomas Philip Barber.

Important Memorials

You can also find memorials inside the church. These are special plaques or statues that remember people who have passed away. In the north-west corner of the tower, there is a memorial for Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne.
