St Mary the Virgin's Church in South Darley is a special old church in Derbyshire, England. It's part of the Church of England. This church is so important that it's been given a "Grade II listed" status, which means it's a historic building that needs to be protected. Right at the entrance to the churchyard, there's a memorial. It remembers the brave men from the area who lost their lives in the two big World Wars.
Building History
This church was built a long time ago, in 1845. A talented architect named Joseph Mitchell from Sheffield designed it. The church was officially opened and made sacred on June 19, 1845.
Later, more parts were added to the church. This happened in 1880 and then again between 1885 and 1886. In 1885, the chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was made much bigger. It was extended by 27 feet! The floor of the chancel was decorated with beautiful tiles. These special tiles were made by a company called Maw and Son. Some people think this church might look like a church in France. It could be based on the design of the Protestant Reformed Church of Troyes in Normandy.
Church Community
This church is part of a "joint parish." This means it works together with a few other churches in the area. They share resources and sometimes have services together.
The churches in this joint parish are:
- Mission Room, Over Hackney
- St John the Baptist's Church, Winster
- St Helen's Church, Darley Dale
The Organ
Inside the church, there is a pipe organ. It was made by a company called Wadsworth. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register if you are interested.
Services Today
Today, church services are held on a rotating schedule. This means the services move between St Mary's Church and the other churches in the joint parish. This way, all the churches get to host services regularly.
