Completed 13th century

The Church of St Michael is a very old and special church located in Clapton in Gordano, a village in Somerset, England. It was built a long, long time ago, starting in the 13th century (that's the 1200s!). This church is so important that it's officially recognized as a Grade I listed building. This means it's one of the most historically significant buildings in England!

Even though it's not used for regular church services anymore, it's looked after by a group called the Churches Conservation Trust. They make sure old churches like St Michael's are kept safe and sound for everyone to enjoy. The church officially came under their care on June 1, 1995. Sometimes, special services are still held there throughout the year.

A Look at the Church's History

The oldest part of the Church of St Michael that you can still see today is a stone carving from the 12th century. This carving is called a tympanum, and it's found above a doorway. Most of the church building, however, was constructed in the 13th century.

The very first mention of this church in official records dates back to 1226. This was an agreement made between William, who was the son of Arthur de Clopton, and Richard of Keynsham Abbey.

Inside the Church

When you step inside the Church of St Michael, you'll find many interesting features. There are decorative screens behind the altar, known as reredos, and old wooden benches. You can also see a font from the 14th century. A font is a special basin used for baptisms.

One of the most unique items is a wooden screen made of oak from the 13th century. This screen wasn't always in the church! It originally came from the nearby Court House. It used to divide the Great Hall from the Buttery (a room for storing food and drinks) in that building. There is also a monument inside the church that dates from the late 17th century.
